The death toll from the consumption of toxic bootlegged liquor in the southern port city of Karachi rose to 18, as at least nine more people lost their battle for life on Monday, hospital officials said.
At least half a dozen people were still admitted to the hospital in precarious condition, raising fears that the casualties may rise further.
“It is a sorry situation and seven more people passed away one by one during the course of the day,” a senior doctor at the Jinnah Hospital, the city’s biggest state hospital, said.
“We are trying to save the remaining patients but their condition is also still unstable,” the doctor said. Police had said a day earlier that about two dozen people, residents of Azam Basti in the Mehmoodabad neighbourhood of Karachi, were affected by the poisonous liquor, which they consumed on Saturday night, the second day of Eid Al Fitr.
All the dead belonged to the minority Christian community and included two brothers, identified as Asif Masih and Siddiq Masih.
On Sunday police had detained two people on charges of selling substandard liquor and was still searching for another two.
Liquor is banned for Muslims in Pakistan, but some licensed shops are allowed to sell alcohol to non-Muslims. However, even those shops were closed down during the holy month of Ramadan, which just ended.
